Disabled Empowerment and Rehabilitation (DEAR)

Need to Empower Disabled Persons, says Advisor Mr. K.K. Sharma on World Disabled DayRotarians committed to the cause of Disabled Persons

On December 5, 2011 Cheshire Homes Chandigarh handed over six tricycles, one wheel chair, six sewing machines and a bicycle to disabled persons to commemorate the World Disabled Day. Railway Concession Passes were also distributed. Artificial arm will also be provided to a disabled person. Four disabled persons were identified for job placements.


The chief guest, Mr. K.K. Sharma, Advisor to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh, commended the efforts of Cheshire Homes Chandigarh for empowering the disabled persons and making them self-reliant. Mr. Sharma called upon all sections of the civil society, government and other non-government organizations to work for disabled persons.


Chairman Cheshire Homes Chandigarh, PP Rtn. Gurdip Singh Deep said Chairman Emeritus Rtn. Maj Gen A.S. Kahlon has put in lot of efforts ever since it was established in Nov. 2002. There are 19 inmates in this Home. Rtn. Gurdip added that Cheshire Homes has identified 600 disabled persons belonging to the economically poor strata of the society, who are helped through the outreach programme. He also acknowledged the financial contributions by Rtn. Chiranjiv Singh, PP Rtn. Dr. Kesho Ram Gupta and PP Rtn. Dr. V.J.S. Vohra for purchase of the equipments.                                                                         

Governing Body Member, Rtn. Dr. V.J.S. Vohra said World Disabled day is celebrated every year since 1981 on 3rd December to create awareness and to promote an understanding of disability issues and rights of disabled persons, who according to United Nations are 15% of world’s population. We have 2.19 crore disabled persons in India, as per Govt. survey.
Other Rotarians present in the function to support the empowerment of disabled persons were PP Rtn. Charanjit Singh , PP Rtn. Dr. Balram K. Gupta, PE Rtn. Ritu Singal, Secretary of Cheshire Homes R’ann Maniki Deep, R’ann Indu Vohra, Inner Wheel Chandigarh Midtown members, PDC Neeru Khattar and PP Deepa Sahib Singh.


Prominent physically challenged persons present were Mr. K.C. Wadhawan, Prof. Dr. Vijay Nagpal, Mr. Gurbir S. Kochhar and Mr. Harmesh Kumar.
